Marike Lucas Reinefeld (1991) is a writer and poet. She grew up in a family of Calvinist farmers. She added the name "Lucas" herself, because she also feels like a boy. Among other things, she studied at the Amsterdam School of Writing. For her first poetry collection Kalfsvlies (2015, Calf's caul), in 2016 she won the prestigious C. Buddingh’ Debut Poet Award. In the same year, she was named Literary Talent of the Year by the renowned Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. In 2019, her second poetry collection Fantoommerrie (Phantom Mare) was released, for which she won the Ida Gerhardt Poetry Prize. With the English translation of her novel De avond is ongemak (2018), The Discomfort of Evening (2020), she won the important Booker International Prize in 2020 as the first Dutch author. Her second novel Mijn lieve gunsteling (My dear beloved) was released in November 2020 and received praising reviews only. Her work, often autobiographical about her life in the countryside, is exuberant, adventurous and rich in metaphors.
