Maarten van der Graaff (1987) is a poet, novelist and essayist. He studied comparative religion and art in Utrecht. He made his debut with the poetry collection Vluchtautogedichten (2013, Poems get away by car), for which he won the prestigious C. Buddingh’ Award as a debut poet. His second poetry collection, Dood werk (Dead Work) was released in 2015 and in 2017, he was awarded the J.C. Bloem. In 2017 he published his first novel, Wormen en engelen (Worms and Angels) about his Calvinist upbringing on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in the province of South Holland. This book also won an award: the 2018 Religious Book Award. Together with Frank Keizer, they founded, in 2018, the online literary magazine Samplekanon. He also teaches creative writing at the Arnhem School of the Arts. His poems are often uninterrupted words and storms of images, with great intensity, and through them he tries to bring a flow to his life and to the postmodern reality that surrounds him.
