Sergio Roic was born in Sebenico, Dalmatia, in 1959, into a family whose roots lay in the island of Lesina of the former Yugoslavia (nowadays Croatia). In 1968, the family moved to Lugano, Switzerland. He returned to Yugoslavia and enrolled at the University of Zagabria, from which he graduated in Literature and Philosophy. He afterwards made his way back to the Canton of Ticino, where he worked at the newspaper Corriere del Ticino for twelve consecutive years. In 1991, his book “Innumerevoli Uomini” (Innumerable People) won the Campione d’Italia prize. His 2004 book “Il Tempo Grande” (The Great Time) was awarded the Nuove Lettere prize by the Italian Culture Institute of Naples (Istituto di Culturo di Napoli). His publication “Il Gioco del Mondo: Romanzo blu in 6 Quadri e 34 Immagini” (The Game of the World: A Romance in 6 Paintings and 34 Images) was also honored by the Pro Helvetia foundation. Roic was a candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland for the Lugano municipal elections of 2013 and currently holds the office of president of the Swiss-Italian Chapter of PEN International.
